The Tragic Ghost of Alice Flagg

In the quiet coastal town of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, one of the Lowcountry’s most enduring legends lingers in whispers and shadows — the story of Alice Flagg. Her tale is one of forbidden love, heartbreak, and a restless spirit that has haunted the region for more than a century.

A Love Forbidden

Alice Flagg was a young woman of privilege in the mid-1800s, living at a plantation known as The Hermitage. Coming from a wealthy and respected family, she was expected to marry well. But Alice’s heart chose differently — she fell in love with a man her family deemed unsuitable, a working-class suitor without the wealth or social standing they demanded.

Alice accepted a ring from him, wearing it secretly on a ribbon around her neck, hiding the love her family would not allow.

The Ring Torn Away

When her brother, Dr. Allard Flagg, discovered the ring, his fury knew no bounds. Seeing the relationship as a disgrace to their name, he ripped the ribbon from Alice’s neck and hurled the ring away into the inlet. For Alice, it was more than just a piece of jewelry — it was the symbol of her love and devotion. Losing it was devastating.

A Life Cut Short

Soon after, Alice fell ill with a fever, and despite her family’s care, she grew weaker and weaker. Some say it was her broken heart as much as her sickness that led to her early death. She was laid to rest in the All Saints Episcopal Church cemetery in Pawleys Island, her grave marked only with a simple stone carved with the single word: “ALICE.”

The Restless Spirit

The story did not end there. Locals say Alice’s spirit still wanders, searching for her lost ring. Visitors to her grave claim to feel a strange tug at their fingers, as if unseen hands are testing for a ring. Some report glimpses of a pale young woman in a white dress moving quietly through the trees.

Today, people often leave rings, flowers, and tokens on Alice’s grave, hoping to bring peace to the young woman whose love was stolen from her. Others walk backward around her grave, keeping alive the tradition that her ghost may reveal itself to those brave enough to honor her.

A Legend That Endures

Alice Flagg’s story has become one of South Carolina’s most famous ghost tales, told on countless tours and in hushed tones by locals. Whether you believe in spirits or not, her grave remains a place of quiet mystery — a reminder of love denied, and a heart that refused to rest.
