If you’ve ever driven along Interstate 85 near Gaffney, South Carolina, chances are you’ve spotted something impossible to miss—a massive peach rising above the treeline. Known as the Peachoid, this 135-foot-tall water tower has become one of the South’s quirkiest and most beloved roadside landmarks.
A Tower with a Purpose
Completed in 1981, the Peachoid was designed to do more than hold water. Gaffney and Cherokee County were once among the largest peach producers in the United States, rivaling even Georgia, the self-proclaimed “Peach State.” Local leaders wanted a symbol to remind travelers that South Carolina grows more peaches than Georgia—and what better way than a giant peach looming over the interstate?
The Peachoid stores 1 million gallons of water, its steel frame disguised beneath a peach painted in over 20 shades of orange, red, and yellow, complete with a sculpted leaf and stem. Artist Peter Freudenberg added the finishing touches, ensuring it looked like a ripe fruit fresh off the tree.
More Than Just a Peach
Of course, the Peachoid isn’t just famous for its agricultural symbolism. With its curved shape and well-defined cleft, the tower has gained a cheeky reputation. Some jokingly call it the “Moon over Gaffney”, while others simply admire its bold design as one of America’s most unusual water towers.
Pop Culture Fame
The Peachoid leapt into the national spotlight when it appeared in Netflix’s political drama House of Cards. In one memorable episode, the landmark became the centerpiece of a political controversy, firmly planting Gaffney’s giant peach in the minds of millions of viewers around the world. Since then, it’s attracted curious tourists and photographers eager to snap their own peach-perfect shots.
Keeping the Peach Fresh
Like any good fruit, the Peachoid needs care. Over the years, it has undergone several repaintings and restorations to keep its colors bright and its details sharp. In 2015, muralist Eric Henn gave it a fresh makeover, ensuring the peach looked as juicy as ever. A security fence now surrounds it to deter vandals, protecting one of South Carolina’s quirkiest treasures.
A Symbol of Local Pride
Beyond the jokes and tourist snaps, the Peachoid remains a proud emblem of Gaffney and the state’s agricultural heritage. It blends function and flair, serving both as vital infrastructure and a bold statement about local identity. Travelers on I-85 can’t help but smile when they see it, making the Peachoid a true roadside legend.
