Tucked away in Burlington, North Carolina, there’s a stretch of road and old mill houses that locals have long referred to as “Munchkinland.” The name comes from an eerie urban legend that has swirled around the Glencoe Mill Village for decades.
The story goes that when you drove down the winding road through the village years ago, the small, weathered houses created an unsettling, fairytale-like scene. Locals whispered that if you honked your horn or stopped your car, small figures would appear from the shadows—sometimes throwing rocks, bottles, or even shaking the car to scare away curious visitors. For many teenagers growing up in Burlington, a late-night trip to “Munchkinland” became a test of courage.
Behind the legend, however, lies a story grounded in real people. Some say the rumors stemmed from a local family who happened to be shorter in stature than most. They were remembered by some neighbors as kind and devoted churchgoers, but others cruelly turned them into the subjects of gossip. Over time, this gossip twisted into darker tales of ghostly encounters and “mischievous little people” lurking in the village.
The setting of these stories—Glencoe Mill Village—has its own deep history. Built in the 1880s to house textile workers, the village fell into decline after the mill closed in 1954. Empty houses, cracked windows, and overgrown yards created a backdrop that only fueled the spooky reputation. Paranormal enthusiasts even claimed to see strange figures or ghostly shapes wandering the area, adding new chapters to the “Munchkinland” lore.
Today, much of Glencoe has been restored and recognized as a historic district. The once-abandoned homes have been carefully renovated, preserving the character of the village while bringing it back to life. Though the neighborhood now shines with history and community spirit, the old stories of Munchkinland still linger. They remain part of Burlington’s folklore—a reminder of how abandoned places, misunderstood people, and a touch of imagination can spark legends that endure for generations.
