But beneath his hospitality was something far darker.
According to folklore, Stuckey had a deadly habit of murdering his guests after they fell asleep. He would rob them of their possessions, tie weights to their bodies, and toss them into the Chunky River below. For years, he preyed on travelers along the lonely road, his crimes hidden beneath the murky current.
Eventually, his luck ran out. The townsfolk uncovered his gruesome secret, and Stuckey was captured, tried, and hanged from the bridge that still bears his name. Some versions say his body was left swinging as a warning to others; others claim his inn was burned to the ground that same night.
