A Town with a Mysterious Past

Nestled deep in Madison County, along the French Broad River, lies the small town of Hot Springs, North Carolina. Known for its therapeutic mineral waters, the town has long been a destination for those seeking relaxation and healing. But behind the serene façade of the bubbling springs and quiet mountains lies a haunted history that continues to stir curiosity.

The German Internment Camp

One of the strangest chapters in Hot Springs’ past occurred during World War I. In 1917, when the United States declared war on Germany, nearly 2,500 German nationals—including sailors and civilians—were taken into custody and brought to a makeshift internment camp in Hot Springs. The camp was set up on the grounds of the grand Mountain Park Hotel, which once overlooked the thermal springs.

While conditions were not as brutal as other wartime prisons, stories tell of disease, despair, and even deaths among those held there. Some locals whisper that the restless spirits of these men still linger. Visitors near the old camp site have reported ghostly lights, faint voices in German, and an overwhelming sense of sadness that seems to hang in the air.

The Haunted Mountain Park Hotel Grounds

The Mountain Park Hotel itself burned down in 1920, leaving only ruins and memories. Yet, the land where it stood is often described as “active.” Guests walking nearby at night have claimed to hear footsteps crunching in the gravel, even when no one else is there. Others have told of shadowy figures moving in the mist that rolls off the springs, vanishing as quickly as they appear.

Spirits of the Springs

The natural hot springs themselves were once considered sacred by the Cherokee, who believed the waters had powerful spiritual and healing properties. Some say the spirits of the land still guard the springs, and that those who visit with ill intent may feel a chill or hear strange whispers carried on the mountain wind.

A Place Where Past and Present Meet

Today, Hot Springs is a quiet, welcoming town where visitors come for hiking, rafting, and soaking in the mineral waters. But its haunted history lingers. Whether it’s the echoes of war, the memories of the lost Mountain Park Hotel, or the ancient spirits tied to the springs, there’s a sense that Hot Springs holds more than just mineral magic—it holds secrets of the supernatural.
