Tucked away near the small town of Richfield, North Carolina, there lies a stretch of road that has baffled visitors for decades. Known as Gravity Hill, this unassuming country lane is a place where cars appear to roll uphill all on their own, defying the very laws of physics.
The Phenomenon
When drivers stop at the base of the hill, place their vehicle in neutral, and take their foot off the brake, something strange happens: the car slowly begins to roll uphill. To the eyes of anyone watching, it looks as though gravity has turned upside down.
Of course, science has an explanation. Gravity Hills are really optical illusions. The surrounding landscape—trees, slopes, and lack of a visible horizon—tricks the brain into misreading what is uphill and what is downhill. What looks like an uphill slope is actually a very subtle downhill grade.
But while science may explain the physics, it can’t quite erase the eerie stories that have built up around the hill.
Ghostly Legends
Locals whisper of a tragic accident involving a young mother and her child. According to the tale, their car stalled on the hill and they were struck by an oncoming vehicle. Ever since, people claim their spirits linger, pushing stalled cars out of harm’s way.
In a long-standing tradition, visitors sprinkle baby powder or flour on their bumper before driving to the hill. When the car mysteriously rolls uphill, ghostly handprints are said to appear on the trunk—proof, some say, of unseen hands helping to push.
Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, the stories add to the eerie fun of the place.
