In the heart of Charleston, South Carolina, stands a charming Victorian home turned restaurant that has become one of the city’s most beloved dining spots. But Poogan’s Porch isn’t just famous for its Southern cuisine—it’s also one of Charleston’s most haunted locations.

A Porch with a Past

The building dates back to 1888, originally serving as a family home before being transformed into a restaurant in 1976. During renovations, a scruffy neighborhood dog named Poogan adopted the porch as his own, greeting visitors with wagging tail and bright eyes. Though Poogan passed away in 1979, his spirit is said to remain, and diners still report feeling a friendly nudge under the table as though the loyal pup is searching for scraps.

The Spirit of Zoe St. Amand

Perhaps the most famous ghost at Poogan’s Porch is Zoe St. Amand, who once lived in the house with her sister Elizabeth. After Elizabeth’s death in the 1940s, Zoe slipped into a deep depression, rarely seen without her black mourning dress. She died in 1954, but her presence lingers.

Guests and staff tell stories of Zoe’s restless spirit wandering the dining rooms, opening doors, moving furniture, and appearing in mirrors. Some visitors staying across the street have even reported seeing an elderly woman in black staring from the upstairs window—only for police to find the building empty.

Dining with the Departed

Today, Poogan’s Porch remains a Charleston favorite, known for shrimp and grits, biscuits, and fried chicken. Yet for many, the dining experience includes more than just food. Whether it’s the brush of Poogan’s ghostly fur or Zoe’s apparition watching from the shadows, the restaurant continues to blend fine dining with spine-tingling lore.

A Charleston Tradition

Charleston is steeped in history, and its ghost stories add an extra layer of fascination. Poogan’s Porch stands as a reminder that some spirits never leave home, and that even the most welcoming of places can carry echoes of the past.

So, if you find yourself in Charleston, pull up a chair at Poogan’s Porch. You may come for the Southern hospitality—but don’t be surprised if you leave with a ghost story of your own.
