Tucked away in Anderson County once stood a thriving community called Andersonville. Today, it is remembered not for its bustling mills or riverside life, but as one of South Carolina’s ghost towns—vanished beneath the waters of Lake Hartwell.
A Mill Town on the Tugaloo River
Andersonville was born along the banks of the Tugaloo River, a lifeline for both agriculture and industry in the early 1800s. The river powered gristmills and textile mills, and soon a small community took root. The town boasted a mill, a post office, and several general stores. Farmers from across the region brought their grain to be processed, while families relied on the little town as a local hub.
By the mid-19th century, Andersonville had become a modest but lively settlement. Stories from the era describe wagons rolling in with cotton, corn, and wheat, while children played along the riverbanks. For a time, it seemed like the community was destined to grow and prosper.
Decline and Abandonment
But time was not kind to Andersonville. As industry shifted and other towns in the region grew larger, Andersonville’s importance began to fade. By the early 1900s, fewer families called the town home. Businesses closed their doors, and the once-busy mills grew quiet.
The final blow came in the 1950s, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of the Hartwell Dam. This massive project flooded thousands of acres to create Lake Hartwell, one of the largest reservoirs in the Southeast. Andersonville lay directly in the path of the rising waters. Residents were forced to relocate, and buildings were abandoned.
When the lake filled, much of Andersonville disappeared beneath the surface. What had once been a community became a memory, swallowed by progress.
Ghostly Remnants Beneath the Water
Though most of Andersonville lies underwater today, its ghost lingers. Locals say that when Lake Hartwell’s water levels drop during droughts, the ruins of the old mill and fragments of foundations reappear, giving visitors a fleeting glimpse of the lost town.
Fishermen and boaters who travel the waters of Lake Hartwell are often unaware that beneath them rests an entire community—streets, homes, and businesses that once echoed with life. For historians and storytellers, Andersonville remains a reminder of how quickly human settlements can rise, fall, and vanish into obscurity.
A Forgotten Piece of Carolina History
Today, Andersonville lives on in old maps, historical records, and the memories of a few families whose ancestors once lived there. It’s a true ghost town of South Carolina—not only abandoned, but buried beneath a man-made lake, hidden from view.
