Eolene Davidson: The Lady in Brown
The legend centers around Eolene Davidson, a young and vibrant student who attended the Chowan Baptist Female Institute (the institution that later became Chowan University) in 1885. Known for her grace and intelligence, Eolene was a beloved figure among her classmates. She was especially recognizable for her elegant brown silk taffeta gowns, which earned her the affectionate nickname “The Lady in Brown.”
A Tragic Ending
Tragically, Eolene’s promising life was cut short when she contracted a fever and passed away on Halloween night in 1886, just before she could reunite with her fiancé. Her sudden death left her dreams unfulfilled, and, according to campus legend, her spirit never truly left the halls of Chowan University.
Ghostly Sightings at the Columns Building
Students and faculty have long reported strange occurrences at the Columns Building, her former dormitory. On Halloween night, many claim to hear the soft rustling of taffeta skirts echoing through the halls, as if Eolene herself is wandering the corridors.
